Seems like we can ask ourselves this question about so many things throughout the course of our lifetime. Should I stay in my current job or should I look for a new one? Should I move out of my current home or remodel it? And of course there is what can possibly be called the worst dilemma of all: Should I stay married or should I get a divorce?
At some point in any long relationship, someone always thinks about getting out, but for most of us it takes a long time to reach the point where you believe that is your only option. How do we get to the point where staying becomes impossible and the only thing we can do is leave? Abuse of any kind is certainly a reason someone should not stay in a marriage, but outside of that why do people feel they have to leave?
The answer is that they lose hope. They give up on the idea that their partner will be able to meet their needs, or that their relationship can grow and change. They believe the relationship is stuck and there is no way out.
